CLIC GALLERY of Soho is pleased to announce SEA SURF SUN, a group show featuring the work of
TONY CARAMANICO, ANTOINE VERGLAS, WAYNE LEVIN, JEAN-PHILIPPE PITER and
BURTON MACHEN, all artists who have made the beach and ocean a focus of their work. The exhibit opens
June 16, 2009, with an opening reception on Tuesday, June 23 from 6 to 9 pm.
TONY CARAMANICO, a surfing legend, has been called “a Montauk landmark.” His SURF JOURNALS --sprawling, exuberantly colorful collages mixing words, sketches, and magazine clippings---are at once fun and profound, trippy and mystical, transmitting the ecstasy of his endless summer to the viewer. Accompanying Tony’s artwork will be the photographs of ANTOINE VERGLAS, WAYNE LEVIN, JEAN-PHILIPPE PITER, and BURTON MACHEN. French fashion photographer ANTOINE VERGLAS is known for his uninhibited, wildly sexy black and white portraits, while WAYNE LEVIN’s glowing, ambiguous images, shot underwater, evoke the menace and dark mystery of the sea. Surfer JEAN-PHILIPPE PITER's playfully sensual pictures embody the hedonism and purity of his adopted island home of St. Barth's, and BURTON MACHEN’s calm, sensitive shots of the shore reflect his fascination with the interplay between nature and humans. Together, their images are summer incarnate: the intricate grooves of a palm tree’s trunk, a nude sun worshipper blissfully stretching on shimmering rocks, surfers loping towards the ocean at dawn.
CLIC GALLERY is a newly opened Soho gallery devoted to emerging photographers and artists.
SEA SURF SUN is curated by CLIC GALLERY owner Christiane Celle. Sister shop CLIC BOOKSTORE offers a comprehensive selection of rare, autographed and limited-edition photography books, including TONY CARAMANICO “SURF JOURNALS”, published by CLIC GALLERY in 2008.
