Clic Gallery is proud to present SHOW: PHOTOGRAPHS BY HENRY HORENSTEIN. The exhibit will run from April 6 to May 2, 2010. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, April 8, from 6:30 to 9 pm, featuring a screening of the short documentary SHOW, by Henry Horenstein, Hillary Spera and William A. Anderson.
In the past few decades, neo-burlesque, which encompasses fetish, drag and vaudeville acts, has exploded on the New York and Los Angeles underground. Acclaimed photographer Henry Horenstein has been snapping the performers, onstage and backstage, since 2001. His photo exhibit SHOW gleefully documents the fishnet-clad personalities of this remarkable nightlife phenomenon, including superstars like Dita Von Teese and Murray Hill. These lush black and white images are intimate and raunchy, as grinning sword swallowers and belly dancers proudly model their body piercings and pasties. In conjunction with the exhibit, Clic Gallery will be hosting a burlesque party with nightlife legend Murray Hill and many of the performers featured in the photographs. (Details on this event to come.)
HENRY HORENSTEIN was born in 1947. He is the author of numerous classic works of photography, including Animalia, Honky-Tonk, Canine, Creature and Close Relations. He is a professor at Rhode Island School of Design and lives in Boston. His photographs are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History, the George Eastman House, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Library of Congress. The subject of numerous gallery shows in the US and overseas, he is represented in New York through Clic Gallery.
